The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Clacton Airshow) Regulations 2026
The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Clacton Airshow) Regulations 2026 establish temporary flight restrictions necessary for public safety during scheduled flying displays at Clacton-on-Sea on August 27th and 28th, 2026, by prohibiting aircraft from flying below 3,500 feet within a 3-nautical-mile radius of the specified center point between 0900 and 1600 hours UTC on those dates, with exceptions granted only by the Airshow Flying Display Director.
Arguments For
Public safety is directly enhanced by restricting unauthorized aircraft from airspace occupied by performing aircraft engaged in high-energy maneuvers during public flying displays.
Centralized control over the restricted airspace, managed through permissions issued by the Clacton Airshow Flying Display Director, ensures that only necessary and approved operations occur during the event period.
The regulations provide a clear legal basis, utilizing powers under Article 239 of the Air Navigation Order 2016, to manage aerial activity around significant public events.
Arguments Against
The restrictions impose constraints on standard air navigation and potentially delay authorized flights not directly involved with the airshow due to the defined temporary exclusion zone.
The necessity of restricting flights below 3,500 feet across the specified area between 0900 and 1600 hours on two full days may be seen as overly broad if only the immediate display area requires protection.
Reliance on UTC time requires pilots and operators to correctly translate stated times to local British Summer Time (BST), introducing a potential for operational error if not carefully managed.

The regulations were formally made by the relevant authority on June 10th, 2026.
Critically, they will legally take effect on August 27th, 2026, which aligns with the start date of the scheduled airshow events.
The Secretary of State has decided that it is necessary in the public interest to restrict flying in the area specified in regulation 3(1) by reason of the intended holding of flying displays that are scheduled to take place there.
The Secretary of State determined that restricting flying in a specific area is required for the public good.
This necessity stems directly from the planned holding of flying displays scheduled to occur in that location.
The Secretary of State makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by article 239 of the Air Navigation Order 2016( a ).
The authority enacting these rules is the Secretary of State.
The legislative power used to create these restrictions comes from Article 239 of the 2016 Air Navigation Order.
Citation and commencement
- These Regulations may be cited as the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Clacton Airshow) Regulations 2026 and they come into force on 27th August 2026.
This section sets out the formal short title that referring to these rules: The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Clacton Airshow) Regulations 2026.
It confirms that the operative date when these restrictions become legally binding is August 27th, 2026.
Interpretation
- In regulation 3(1) the times referred to are Co-ordinated Universal Time( b ).
This clause clarifies how time must be interpreted for the purposes of the restrictions detailed in Regulation 3(1).
All times mentioned must be understood as Co-ordinated Universal Time (UTC).
Restricted airspace
- -(1) Subject to paragraph (2), beginning with 0900 hours and ending with 1600 hours on each of the two days of 27th and 28th August 2026 no aircraft is to fly below 3,500 feet above mean sea level within the area bounded by a circle having a radius of 3 nautical miles which is centred at 514646N 0010837E.
(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply to any aircraft operating in accordance with a permission issued by the Clacton Airshow Flying Display Director.
This outlines the core restriction: from 0900 to 1600 UTC on both August 27th and 28th, 2026, aircraft cannot fly lower than 3,500 feet above sea level.
This restriction applies within a circular area having a 3-nautical-mile radius, centered at the specified geographical coordinates (51°46.76' N, 001°08.46' E).
However, the prohibition does not apply to any aircraft that holds a specific operating permission granted by the official Director responsible for the Clacton Airshow's flying displays.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Regulations)
These Regulations impose restrictions on flying in the vicinity of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex during flying displays for the public that are scheduled to take place there on 27th and 28th August 2026.
This introductory note, which is not legally part of the regulations, explains that the rules place limits on aircraft movements near Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, due to planned public flying displays on August 27th and 28th, 2026.
Many aircraft will be involved in high energy manoeuvres during the displays and therefore the Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport agree that flying should be restricted in the vicinity of the displays for reasons of public safety.
The basis for imposing restrictions is public safety, as the aircraft participating will execute high-energy maneuvers.
Both the Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport support restricting air traffic near the display sites for this reason.
The times mentioned in regulation 3(1) are Co-ordinated Universal Time (UTC) which is one hour behind British Summer Time (BST).
This reiterates the time clause: the UTC times specified in Regulation 3(1) are equivalent to one hour behind the local British Summer Time.
In relation to the permission mentioned in regulation 3(2) the Clacton Airshow Flying Display Director may be contacted as notified.
Regarding permissions to fly within the restricted zone (Regulation 3(2)), interested parties must contact the Clacton Airshow Flying Display Director using contact details that have been formally notified elsewhere.
Full details of this Statutory Instrument will be promulgated by Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) and Notice to Aviation (NOTAM).
Complete operational details regarding these flight restrictions will be formally communicated to the aviation community through an Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) and a Notice to Airmen/Air Missions (NOTAM).
The point of contact in the Civil Aviation Authority is Mr David Ridley, Airspace Regulator, Safety and Airspace Regulation Group, on telephone number 03301 382471.
