The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Llanwonno, Wales) (Emergency) Regulations 2026

Established an emergency restricted airspace zone for unmanned aircraft near Llanwonno, Wales, effective 3 August 2026.

The Secretary of State prohibits the flight of unmanned aircraft below 2,600 feet above mean sea level within a specified radius of Llanwonno, Wales.

The order applies to all drone operators, except those acting under the specific direction of the South Wales Police Operational Support Inspector.

These emergency restrictions took effect at 2:11 p.m. on 3 August 2026 to facilitate the response to an unspecified emergency in the area.

Arguments For

  • The Secretary of State asserts that the restrictions are necessary for reasons affecting the public interest due to an emergency having arisen in the specified area.

  • The document states that the measures are intended to be of temporary duration and will be revoked once the emergency has passed.

  • Proponents of such emergency measures generally argue that restricted airspace prevents interference with emergency services and ensures public safety during active incidents.

Arguments Against

  • Civil liberties groups have occasionally raised concerns regarding the lack of specific detail in emergency instruments about the nature of the 'emergency' being cited.

  • Operators of unmanned aircraft may face sudden logistical disruptions due to the immediate commencement of the regulations without a prior notice period.

  • Legal scholars have noted that the broad discretion granted to police to authorize exceptions can lead to inconsistent application of the flight ban.

Citation and commencement

  1. These Regulations may be cited as the Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Llanwonno, Wales) (Emergency) Regulations 2026 and come into force with immediate effect.
