The Power to Award Degrees etc. (S P Jain London School of Management Limited) (Amendment) Order 2025

Published: Wed 19th Nov 25

The Order amends the 2023 authorisation for S P Jain London School of Management Limited, setting its degree-awarding term to expire on 30th August 2027.

The Office for Students issues this Order to modify the existing 2023 authorisation granting S P Jain London School of Management Limited the power to award degrees, specifically by fixing the term of this authorization to run from September 1st, 2023, until the end of August 30th, 2027, confirming that statutory procedures regarding quality advice and notification have been followed.

Arguments For

  • The extension ensures continuity for S P Jain London School of Management Limited, maintaining the educational provision and standards already established under the 2023 Order.

  • The amendment confirms that the necessary regulatory steps, including receiving and considering advice from the relevant body regarding quality and standards, have been completed by the Office for Students (OfS) as required by the Higher Education and Research Act 2017 (HERA).

  • Establishing a fixed term, expiring on 30th August 2027, allows for a structured future reassessment of the institution's authorization by the OfS.

Arguments Against

  • Extending an existing authorization without a full, immediate re-evaluation might raise concerns about potential stagnation in quality improvement if the initial term was deemed too short or too long for adequate oversight.

  • The structure of fixed-term authorizations requires regulatory bodies to dedicate resources to periodic reviews, which might divert attention from newer or higher-risk providers.

  • Amending an existing Order introduces administrative steps and legal formality, which could be simplified if the initial authorization framework allowed for more flexible term adjustments.

The Office for Students, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 42(1) and (9) and 44(1) of the Higher Education and Research Act 2017, makes the following Order.

The Office for Students has requested advice from the relevant body regarding the quality of, and standards applied to, higher education provided by the provider and has had regard to that advice in accordance with sections 46(1)(a) and (b) and 46(7) of that Act.

The Office for Students has complied with the procedure on giving notifications in accordance with section 48 of that Act.
