The Air Navigation (Restriction of Flying) (Shobdon Air Race) Regulations 2026

Published: Tue 15th Sept 26

Restricted airspace below 2,000 feet near Shobdon Aerodrome for the Royal Aero Club Air Race in September 2026.

These Regulations prohibit aircraft from flying below 2,000 feet above mean sea level in a designated area near Shobdon Aerodrome, Herefordshire, during specific periods on 19 and 20 September 2026.

The restrictions support the safe conduct of the Royal Aero Club Air Race by limiting non-participating traffic in the racing circuit.

These rules apply to all aircraft except those granted specific permission by Shobdon aerodrome flight services or Royal Aero Club race officials.

Arguments For

  • The Secretary of State asserts that these restrictions are necessary in the public interest to ensure safety during the Royal Aero Club Air Race.

  • The Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport state that the large number of aircraft participating in the race necessitates flight restrictions for public safety.

  • The regulations provide a mechanism for authorized flight within the restricted zone via permissions from specific airfield services or race officials.

Arguments Against

  • Local pilots or commercial operators not involved in the race may face disruption due to the temporary closure of airspace below 2,000 feet.

  • The complexity of the geographic coordinates (bounding lines) may require precise navigational equipment or training to ensure unintentional breaches do not occur.

  • Reliance on specific communication channels for permission (UTC vs BST) could lead to confusion for general aviation pilots not familiar with Co-ordinated Universal Time.
