The Power to Award Degrees etc. (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering) (Amendment) Order 2026
This Order extends the period during which the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) is authorized to grant taught degrees.
It amends a 2023 Order to change the expiration date of these powers from 30 November 2026 to 30 November 2027.
The Order applies to the Office for Students and NMITE, following a review of the provider's educational standards and quality.
Arguments For
The Order states that the Office for Students (OfS) requested and had regard to advice from the relevant body concerning the quality and standards of the higher education provided by the institution.
The document specifies that the extension is granted under powers conferred by the Higher Education and Research Act 2017, following established notification procedures.
The explanatory note indicates the variation is intended to extend the existing degree-awarding authorization for a specific fixed term.
Arguments Against
Legal scholars might note that the instrument relies on the advice of a "relevant body" without specifying the nature of that advice or any potential conditions attached to the extension.
Affected students or partner institutions might seek clarity on whether further extensions will be required or if the institution will transition to permanent degree-awarding powers after the new 2027 expiry date.
Citation and commencement
- This Order may be cited as the Power to Award Degrees etc. (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering) (Amendment) Order 2026 and shall come into force on 1st July 2026.
This section establishes the official name of the Order and sets the date it becomes legally effective. Starting 1 July 2026, the amendments to the institution's degree-awarding authority take effect.
Variation of the Power to Award Degrees etc. (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering) Order 2023
- -(1) The Power to Award Degrees etc. (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering) Order 2023( 2 ) is varied in accordance with paragraph (2).
